Re: Getting Started with Sprockets and Chain

There is a bit more that goes into this decision. If you look at the graphs 775Pros don't really mind stalling @4V. If your mechanism design/gear ratios don't need more than .237N*m (AKA .71N*m *...

Re: Advantages/Disadvantages of West Coast Drive

Both Vex and WCP make pretty much COTS "plug-and-play" gearboxes for WCD.

Re: pic: Input Stage Wear

Iirc the bearing block is geometrically/mechanically locked in position in reference to the gearbox plate. Aren't those screws only being loaded in tension to clamp on the tube?

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've seen on a robot?

I've heard rumors that 1717 made LA finals in 2012 with 3 swerve modules operational(they didn't have time to replace the module until the break between SF and F).

Re: Alternatives to RoboRIO or Robot Controllers

BeagleBone Black might be a good option. I believe most of 971's code in 2014 (http://frc971.org/files/2014-ControlsDocumentation.pdf)ran on it, and essentially the cRio was just an interface for...

Re: Position and velocity PIDControllers using same encoder

1836 did this for a couple different mechanisms in 2016. On the drivetrain, it helped keep the left and right sides of the drive in sync while also overcoming many of the issue with inertia during...

Re: NAVX vs. Spartan board

The navX-MXP can also be mounted independently, assuming you use USB to connect to the roboRio

Re: NAVX vs. Spartan board

This past year 1836 did this so that we had freedom to place our roboRio in any orientation.

Re: Tuning PID Constants Over a Range

We found success using a velocity PID loop on the roboRio, and in retrospect we should have run the velocity PID loop on the talon. The main issue we were trying to solve was left/right sides moving...

Re: How do you fund your big machinery purchases?

Just for accuracy, only 1836's Haas CNC router was purchased used. The team's large ticket items -- Haas router and Lagun knee mill -- were purchased using school money and donations, with relatively...

Re: High Powered Targeting light on amazon

I find this statement a bit too general. 1836 dialed in our autonomous camera usage enough to consistently use camera targeting in teleop too (from what I remember, we didn't miss more than one auto...

Re: Best Local Teams Containing the Number '254'

I think that we also need to look at percent of graduated girls pursuing STEM careers, in which case we cannot definitively say that 2543 is better than 254 at supporting women in STEM.

Re: How are teams mounting drivetrain encoders on WCD?

I really like thunderhex for this, just because it has the pre-bored hole. This keeps the drill relatively concentric to the axle and helps with chip clearing (the two biggest issues you have to face...

Re: Districts in Israel 2017 Announced

Yeah, I am totally in agreement. Having personally been on the travel team that has gone to Israel (twice now), it was unfortunate seeing the great teams that only had a single chance to compete. I'm...

Re: CAN to PWM converter?

I'm going to agree with Adam here and add on. One of the bigger negatives of CAN is that if your first connection in the daisy chain fails, all of your motor controllers go down. Although CAN seems...

Re: OnShape Offseason Drivetrain

Likely this is because Solidworks is the more developed product. This means that mentors are more experienced with Solidworks/Inventor/Pro E and there are more resources built around those pieces of...

Re: How are teams mounting drivetrain encoders on WCD?

If your encoder mount has some free play or reasonably tight tolerances, I also really like slotting the given shaft and then clamping down with a hex or round shaft collar.

973, 3476, and 330 are all definitely in the mix too for CA.

Re: Districts in Israel 2017 Announced

Agreed. Unfortunately, with California not moving to districts for the next couple of years, teams that have travel to Israel in the past (like 1836 & 1662) won't be able to visit their friends in...

Re: paper: 4 CIM versus 6 CIM theoretical calculations

He is saying that @ 0 RPMs you need to provide 38% of full voltage to draw 200 amps total. At higher RPMs you will need to provide more voltage to draw the same 200 amps. Similarly you need to...

Re: paper: 4 CIM versus 6 CIM theoretical calculations

In practice, my guess is that you can draw way more current than 200 amps. Just based off of my team's 2016 drivetrain, which was 4 CIM with no voltage ramping, we experienced no brownouts even going...

Re: pic: ABS-122, shifter-in-tube chassis

The major issue with this (for my team) is pushing matches: for example, during forward pushing you can easily have 100% weight on the back two wheels.

Re: pic: ABS-122, shifter-in-tube chassis

That is completely dependent on CG height and, given 4587's short robot, probably not a major risk.
