Re: Video Review Needs to Happen Now

I think it's worth discussing exactly what a successful replay challenge should be able to accomplish, in order to more clearly distinguish between good and bad policies.

It's probably inherently...

Re: Backup Coupon Warning

There's a similar discussion, including a GDC member's account1 of the old inoperability criterion here (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?p=619422#post619422). (It's not specifically...

Re: Video Review Needs to Happen Now

Not much has changed in 11 years (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?p=420888#post420888). People are still basically arguing that because it is impractical to have a perfect replay...

Re: Team Update 14 (2016)

This is certainly an old argument, but I continue to disagree with this outlook. Most fundamentally, teams frequently do not, and in many cases effectively cannot know the intent precisely. Every...

Re: Pneumatic Regulators from Automation Direct

I'm inclined to continue using the past interpretation of the rule to resolve the Norgren issue in favour of legality. Since a Norgren R07-100-RNEA regulator can frequently1 be adjusted above 50...

Re: Are these tanks legal?

I'm not sure of such a reference, but there are definitely many (http://www.parker.com/literature/Brass%20Products/Brass%20Product%20-%20Images/BUL.3501%20PTC-QRG.pdf) kinds...

18th. That was a surprise to me too.

Re: T8 - No sandbagging

That's my feeling about it as well. It provides conspicuous moral authority.

I don't think it's unenforceable—but that's because enforcement isn't just a job for the officials. The social norms...

They're not even 4 W. (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1205030#post1205030) (Servo manufacturers who publish ratings based on free speed × stall torque are falsifying or don't...

Re: FIRST Experiences as a Person of Color

That's an unreasonably narrow formulation of the problem. For example, to the extent that Han Chinese populations systematically discriminate against Chinese people of Uyghur or Mongol descent by...

Has it really been 11 years since the last time they changed the logo (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=31832)?

Re: Keep FIRST in Michigan (FiM) from killing FIRST Lego League

I was thinking the same thing. I definitely want to avoid the incoherent mess that characterizes sports governing bodies at the local/school level. On the other hand, FIRST HQ doesn't always seem...

Is that actually in the FTC rules? (FRC rules don't apply to FTC.)

Re: Responsible disclosure practices

That would only apply to exploits of the wireless network itself, though.

What if someone loaded arbitrary firmware on the RoboRIO, for example? (Version numbers or even hashes can be spoofed if...

Re: Future First Championship News

It would be a foolish contract indeed, that failed to spell out ways for the parties to terminate it early.

At this stage—years in advance—it might be as simple as forfeiting a down...

Re: Dangerous precedent set by Q&A 461: Loaning Parts/Assemblies to other teams

To be fair, R1 and the corresponding rules in numerous previous years have suffered from ambiguities about who is a member of the groups allowed to build robot parts for a team, and ambiguities about...

Re: frustrated FRC mentor needs advice

Who does he respect and listen to? If he respects expertise, find engineers to drop in and explain the deficiencies. If he respects colleagues, arrange for them to drop in and talk with him. If he...

Re: Worried about weight ?

As I'm sure you know—but in case others haven't considered this—weight does not include buoyancy. Our conventional methods for measuring weight don't account for that source of error, but with most...

Re: Are we allowed to use old hard drives as counterweights to stabilise our robot?

It actually says "COTS computing device". Is a hard drive a computing device? It is usually used as a computer part, it has one or more microcontrollers in it, and it computes things. There's no rule...

Nothing wrong with proposing that team/sponsor labour be accounted for in the robot cost—as long as you're also willing to consider what the appropriate rates would be for all reasonable...

Re: 1444's First Fully TIG-Welded Frame

Given how much better the doped electrodes work, this is probably a false economy. Better to spend a little more on electrodes, and significantly reduce the risk of a bad weld in a critical assembly.

Re: 1444's First Fully TIG-Welded Frame

Do you have details on the alloys of the extrusions, plates and filler metal, and the heat treatment (if any)? I'm curious if there was explicit consideration of the reduction in temper of the alloy...

Re: Worried about weight ?

Over the limit and you powder-coated it anyway? That stuff isn't exactly light, because of how thick it goes on.
