Re: Average score per match and cycle times

One good rule of thumb is that a good robot will perform tasks (very approximately) as quickly as a human who is moving at a normal, not rushed pace. So try setting up a a field or just some scoring...

Re: Scariest Robot

The scariest robot we've ever built would certainly be our 2015 bot (https://youtu.be/GtlhDHO_9Fc). Combine 18 ft long telescoping wings with hooks on them with season-long gyro and steering issues...

Re: Introducing my team's (in development) scouting app, ThunderScout

Offline. In the past, we've scouted on paper and manually inputted data to excel for analysis We're looking for a good way to digitize our scouting and save some effort without completely changing...

Re: Introducing my team's (in development) scouting app, ThunderScout

We do a lot of analysis in Excel with our data, so it'd be great to have a way to export as an xls or csv or something.

Re: Waterjet/Laser cutters in-house?

We use a CNC plasma cutter that we have access to from a sponsor. We use it to cut our chassis and this year some parts of our intake. The tolerances are fine for us, and it's pretty quick and easy...

Re: Is FIRST about Robot?

I think part of the reason this question is so difficult is the ambiguity of the word "about". When we ask whether FIRST is about Robots, do we mean "Are robots the main practical focus of and...

I'll wait for someone else to do it, then disagree with whatever they say. :p

Re: Pockets on Women's Pants

I didn't realize how much I use my pockets at robotics until we had a pajama day during build season. I spent all day walking around and reaching down for a sharpie or a wrench, only to find a...

Re: Show off your custom clipboards!

I'll just leave this here: http://youtu.be/X0yxShc8ZQ8

On a more serious note, we just drew the field from scratch for convenience. Then we bought a big piece of whiteboard from Home Depot and...

Re: Scouting help.

Eagle Imperium is also trying to move away from paper scouting, and we're in progress with our system right now. The plan is to have an Android app that scouts can run on their phones that records...

Re: Working with alliance partners

I agree with everything that has been said so far. Two specific things that make strategy planning easier and more efficient:

1. Scouting Data - Before planning each match, the scouting team prints...

Re: How is your team structured?

We have three student captains, who do a lot of the organization, planning, and general leadership of the team, and an outreach director. First, candidates for these positions submit resumes to the...

Re: Greatest Robot Bumpers?

We actually tested this idea at our first district this year. We rated all the bumpers when we pit scouted, then later compared the data to our pick list. To our surprise, there was hardly any...

Re: [TBA] 2016 Season Recap

Re: Hardest personal lesson learned?

This year, I learned a lot about how other teams work, both in our area and around the world, and it brought me a new rush of perspective. As a result, I came to the uncomfortable realization that...

Re: WILL.I.AM's comment on Einstein

I really appreciated Will.i.am's comment. I think his use of profanity did a beautiful job of cutting straight through all of the buzzwords and marketing speak that we (and I'm guilty of this too)...

Re: What would you do to improve the FIRST experience?

I totally agree with this. Last year, my team started developing this very thing - we call it WAPUR, for Washtenaw (county) Pickup Robotics. The goal was to design a game that could be played as a...

Re: Predictions for Season High Score

Interestingly, 27 takes down the drawbridge very quickly, and used this very well during MSC playoffs to get some very high scores. When matches are decided by a few extra high goals or an extra...
