3/16" rivets may be a better as it is cheaper and easier to get the rivets and tooling needed and are plenty strong enough when used correctly.

The first MATLAB book I used at Georgia Tech was this (http://www.pearsonhighered.com/educator/academic/product/0,3110,0136080634,00.html). Its a bit expensive compared to some other books out there....

I think if it safe to assume this is the chassis as the images has the tag "frame".

I could be off, I just guessed some general dimensions and assumed .5lbs a foot. I think its like .51 pounds a foot. Since its welded you dont have all of those brackets whose weight adds up.
