Re: what to use some of the vouchers for?

We use the Digi-Key voucher to buy all of the connector housings and contacts for PWM and sensor cables that we use for the entire year. Over a few years we accumulated enough leftovers that we were...

Re: New AndyMark Product Game Hint???

I drive past the one and only Wiffle factory every day and I've noticed no unusual activity lately. Plus, I probably would have heard something unless they're VERY good at keeping secrets. The place...

Re: Yet another new mentor question - how much to order preseason?

We already know we'll need bumpers this year, so a box of solid pool noodles would be nice to have ahead of time. I'm sure the Florida teams can buy them whenever they want them. Probably a bit...

Re: drilling larger holes in aluminum

We've used cutters like those and they work very well in aluminum. Our approach for bearing holes is a bit different. We use a 28mm cutter (a couple thousandths too small) and follow up with an...

Re: New AM Shrink Tube Solder

We've used them for making PWM Y-cables many times and they have served us well. The finished splices are stronger than the wire at either end. We have never tried them on wire larger than 22 AWG....

Re: Questions About Tools

We don't use a bench grinder very often, but it's been useful a few times. Sometimes we need a bolt just a thread or two shorter. Then there was that time in week 6 of build season in 2015 when we...

Re: Reliability of Pixy Camera?

The Pixy is primarily a color sensor, so there is a balance to be found between consistently seeing what you want it to see with the exclusion of everything else. There are settings within the...

Re: Reliability of Pixy Camera?

We shot from anywhere along the outer works and from along the left edge of the field (as viewed from our driver station). Our preferred and most practiced spot was halfway between the low bar and...

Re: Reliability of Pixy Camera?

We used the Pixy camera from week 5 on in Stronghold. It was the key to our autonomous high shot and a major contributor to our 9-11 high goal matches. The interface we chose to use was the simplest...

Re: 2017 - New England District Event Schedule

If I'm remembering correctly, Waterbury is a 32-team event. UMASS Dartmouth may have been even smaller.

Re: Driver Station Laptop

This year we used an Acer Aspire One netbook running Windows 10 on an Intel Atom and it did everything we asked of it. We did not do image processing on the driver station. As far as I know, nobody...

Re: Do Non-School Teams Have An Advantage?

We can only dream about these. Often the school affiliation feels like shackles.

We can't take home-schooled kids from within our own town.

Except for large distances where air travel is...

Re: Is Welding Worth It?

We've discussed welding but haven't gone down that path. Our frames for the past 3 years have been riveted with 3/16" stainless rivets (they were free...). We sheared no rivets and the frame was...

Re: what was the best shooting mechanism for 2016?

No springs or pneumatics. It is a fully electric catapult powered by 2 mini-CIMs. Steve describes it here:

Re: what was the best shooting mechanism for 2016?

I'm curious about how you came to this conclusion. Our catapult could shoot from any legal spot on the field.

Re: Autonomous High Goal goes In and Out

It's happened to us at least 10 times so far this season. We've seen about equal amounts of in the front/out the side and in one side/out the other. Maybe once or twice the chains threw it back out...
