Re: Belts 9mm or 15mm?
This.
If you aren't direct driving a 6wd center wheel with a transmission, I would not recommended using 9mm wide belts. That is the only drive configuration that would make them manageable. If...

Re: Drivetrain Sprocket
If you want to look at the math of the kind of loads chains or belts take and design the system appropriately, you can take a look here:

Re: [FIRST EMAIL] Stop Build Day Survey
I think these are two great points on this subject:
The following is just from my own observations from watching competitions over the years in a district system.
I think there are teams out...

Re: [FIRST EMAIL] Stop Build Day Survey
One thing I haven't seen mentioned was stress on machining sponsors. Eliminating bag and tag would reduce stress on machine sponsors as well.
The team I helped with had access to manual mills and...

Re: pic: Experimental VP drive gearbox
Another thing to consider when going through these exercises is that generally a planetary gear system will be less efficient than a spur gear system.
This may not always be the case, but there are...

Re: [FRC Blog] Where is FIRST going?
For FRC in FiM, we are around 25% for team to school percentage. (411 teams / 1575 high schools). I think it may be more because many teams host multiple high schools, but a few do have multiple...

Re: pic: 25lb Drivetrain
Think of the belly pan like a bunch of strings or cables attached and tied everywhere at the base. It provides additional stiffness when the frame moves away from the belly pan and creates tension,...

Re: Chain vs. Belts?!?
Both chain and belt are legitimate forms of power transfer and can be used successfully with proper implementation.
My personal preference is chain for low speed high torque applications, such as...

Re: Boulder inconsistency issue
There are ways to shoot the ball where the inconsistencies from ball to ball don't affect the trajectory. Keep playing with grip, speed, ball centering, and compression and I'm sure you'll find...

Re: Sultans of Turkiye #2905 Robot Reveal
Looks good! Hopefully we can see your team at champs again.
Does the front of your robot meet the 8" minimum length requirement for the bumpers? They look on the skinny side of 8 inches.

Re: T-Boning a Rhino Track Drive
What is just as interesting as the rhino performance is the KOP performance with the pneumatic wheels.
It seems to be browning out when stalled. The 12 second, 42 second, and the last two pushing...

Re: Drive Wheel Sizes
Smaller wheels also put a smaller moment on the axles when the wheels scrub during a turn. Less force on the axles is usually a good thing.

Re: FRC pocketing
Just to add to this:
The thickness of a plate has a cubic relationship to its rigidity. A "pocketed" plate of thicker material can have significantly more rigidity for the same weight as a thinner...

Re: Intake wheel motors
You are correct. I forgot that we did have to sort through our CIM motors to find suitable keyseat flavors.
There were two reasons we didn't want to cut the shaft down.
1. To use the CIM motors for...

You can run the versa planetary without modifying the CIM output shaft. I talked with Aren at vexpro, and the original intent for the CIM adapter was to leave the shaft unmodified. I do not...

Re: Wheel Spacing Ratios
Agreed, its really CoG dependent. This is more of a worst case scenario of centered weight on 4 of the 6 wheels.
The middle row is a square configuration for wheel contact of the outermost wheels...

Re: Strongest Regionals/District 2016?
Waterford is definitely FiM's strongest district this year. Per Karthik's metric:
1/34 einstein appearance, 12/34 champ elims, 11/34 MSC elims.
With open spots in Ann Arbor, it will be interesting...

Re: Value in Failure vs. Value in Success
I would reword this a little bit, its more of a process. Instead of taking appropriate risks, engineering is about identifying risks and mitigating them. Once the criteria are defined, such as a...
