Re: Shop Development
Fly cutters will get you a better surface finish if you go quickly and have your head very square. See 4:25 in this video for a pretty cool demonstration of a good fly...

Re: Shop Development
For what we do in FRC, it is totally possible to teach students starting on CNC. Everything we do is aluminum, easy to fixture, and uses pretty basic milling operations with end mills that range...

Re: Grabbing 4 Bins from the step in Auto
Its like 4.5 inches thick schedule 80 PVC. Our latch mechanism yanks the container back when it engages, and our plan is to get their fastest.
That said, I do share your concern and we will have...

Re: Grabbing 4 Bins from the step in Auto
We're doing a container grabber this year, and it's actually not that difficult. It's just some PVC pipe, and to keep the thing from wobbling all over the place, we've ran some steel cables from the...

Re: blog; Motor Controller Options for 2015
I also am not an EE, but have a lot of experience with this sort of stuff. In short, you're right, the higher frequency is proportional to higher interference. That said, I checked the spec sheets,...

Re: AutoDesk/Other Software
Honestly, the best way to get better once you have the basics of modeling down, is to just design stuff. You can do tutorials and draw up stuff from books, but the only way to get experience using...

Re: High Torque Arm design questions
Okay, I have a few more questions.
I think we're going to be using some gearbox with a single chain reduction.
We are going to drive the arm pivot because we want the arm to be able to rotate 180...

Re: Pneumatic Restrictions & Improvments
Very true.
This year, we were playing around with a pneumatic launcher, and we wanted to try it with shop air. Strangely, no air was coming from the valve, and after closing all the other valves in...

Motors in reverse and stall torque.
I have a question about electric motors. How much torque do you get when trying to go the opposite way the motor is turning, like when trying to stop a robot?
I believe that it is equal to stall...

Re: Team 254 - 2014 FRC Code
That sounds really cool. Any chance of a picture of it? I don't have something to build the program with at home.
As for the acceleration problem, you could locate local minimums for velocity,...

Re: "Screw" Drive for FRC
Why? If the thread were to be covered in tread, I believe it would work well. You would have a thinner contact area than a typical wheel, but you would contact the ground in multiple places.

Re: "Screw" Drive for FRC
Again, I'm not saying this is a design that's right for FRC, I'm just throwing it out there because I'm doing it for a mini demo robot. The single 775 design would never be used for FRC. This robot...

Re: Alpha Weekend #2, 2015 Control System
Forgive me if this is on a website, or already posted, but I have a few questions about the new control system.
1. How are the times to deploy code, reimage, reboot, or connect?
2. What is the...

"Screw" Drive for FRC
So, for a project related to school, but no the robot team, I'm working on a drive system concept. The idea is to be able to have some type of new or unique omnidirectional style of drive, so I...

I agree with everything you've written. Keeping teams in is really important, and not all schools are ready for a team. Sure, LVR might not be profitable this year, but if FIRST truly believes that...

Re: LAS VEGAS REGIONAL... terminated?
That's unfortunate.
I really love the extra playing time given to teams in districts, but don't you guys think it's important to help out the teams that are located where there aren't a million...

CNC Gears and CAM
This year, for our rotating arm, our team needed a 17 tooth 20 DP gear, so I cut them, on a bridgeport, using an involute gear cutter we had laying around. I made 3 2 inch long gears and parted off...

This is the best post I've read all week.
The game is, IMO, broken because of the overused penalties, delayed scoring, incorrect scoring, lack of rule knowledge by referees, 2003-style defense...
