In regards to the rice-- a solid idea, maybe not for jags, though, unless you want to be fishing rice out of them. With rice, don't leave the bag open with your wet electronics in it-- bugs.

We designed and 3D printed a part to mount encoders, too!
It made mounting magnetic encoders in several places on the robot a lot quicker and easier.

I find that if you get it in right, the wago tool will stay in place well enough for you to put the wire in with your wago-ing hand. It's still a pain, though.

Awards like the ones you mentioned, Rookie All-Star, design awards, etc. aren't submitted for-- instead winners are selected by judges who watch matches and make the rounds to pits at competition....

We found a tiny hole in our ball caused by a splinter that was causing it to deflate rapidly. Patched with regular old duct tape and holding air fine again.

We've cut our electronics board with the exact same machine as you now have access to (epilog laser engraver) for two years now. We used 1/4" ABS both times, and learned some lessons between the two....

I can't speak to the rules exactly, but we used lots of EL wire on our robot last year, and passed two inspections at two different regionals without any complaints from inspectors.
