Re: Sponsor can we morally seek sponsorship from a brewery

Many companies that produce adult beverages fund their charitable donations through foundations. The Adolph Coors Foundation comes to mind immediately as one of the better known examples. I would...

Re: Mentors: What's something you wish you knew going in?

I have to second that. FIRST should come with a warning label.

Re: [FIRST EMAIL] Stop Build Day Survey

I have found exactly the opposite to be true. Condensing the build into six weeks creates such an intense schedule that it is very difficult to convince the marginal mentors to dive in and...

Re: paper: Stop the Stop Build

I agree. One of the strongest motivational factors that sustains a team (IMO) is the sense of ownership the students have in their machine. Win or lose, being able to watch your robot on the field...

Re: [FIRST EMAIL] Stop Build Day Survey

I think exactly the opposite is true. It's easier to sell a lower level commitment for a longer period of time than it is to sell a "total immersion" commitment for 6 weeks.

Re: Project Management Platforms

We're starting on our 4th year of using Trello. We're pretty happy with it. We had to upgrade to Trello Gold due to the size of the CAD and software files we were storing.

Everyone has gotten used...

Re: All local regionals the same weekend?

I agree. Our home Regional is Rocket City, but we absolutely love coming to SMR. It's only 4 hours from home and we have made lots of good friends there over the years. It is a great disappointment...

Re: All local regionals the same weekend?

It sure does put a crimp in our plans here in the SE. It will definitely put a greater strain on our finances as well if the situation remains the same.

Hopefully the decision makers can see...

Re: [FRC Blog] FRC Events Being Posted and AMAA on FUN

Just noticed that Smokey Mountains in Knoxville, Rocket City in Huntsville and Bayou in New Orleans are all scheduled on the same weekend. That puts us SE teams in a bind when we are trying to find...

Re: What can FIRST do to increase FRC team sustainability?

Doesn't make it untrue though.

It hits on the most obvious way to improve sustainability immediately, reduce the logistical and financial barriers to entry. Bag and tag creates artificially high...

Re: Bricked RoboRIO?

We had similar issues with one of our Rios this year. We contacted NI and went through their protocols. We were able to correct the problem for a short period of time, then it would happen again,...

Re: Split Champs assignment

I wonder how many teams will make the decision to forego the extra expense and hassle of the new championship format in favor of an extra regional or district event. Especially since the prestige of...

Re: Split Champs assignment

I'm interested in how the logistics of filling the CMP slots will work. I hadn't considered the fact that teams competing at the same regional/district event could earn spots at different...

Re: Lesson Learned 2016 - The Negative

IMO the main idea behind FIRST is for the mentors and students to work together to produce a machine that the students could never have produced on their own.

Re: What would you do to improve the FIRST experience?

I know this has been discussed many times, and I don't have a solution, but if I had a magic wand I would find a way to lower the financial and logistical barriers to entry. The district system is a...
