Re: When programming doesn't get enough time

We got around this very effectively this year by taking a test-driven approach.

Split whatever code you're trying to test out into its own class, and have its entire interface with the robot be a...

Re: I made a simple statistical match simulator

That's a good point! You're right that it always tries to get balls in its current sector (or, if in the courtyard and no balls available, in the neutral zone), rather than traversing to a location...

Re: I made a simple statistical match simulator

Yeah, that's how the code is written. If expected lineup+shooting time is shorter for one method, that's what they're going to try to do. It doesn't do an expected-value calculation because in my...

I made a simple statistical match simulator

http://www.tourdegiro.com/personal/robosim/

Basically, you plug in a bunch of estimates for how long it takes to do various things, and it tells you how many points on average "your robot" would...

Re: Maximum number of possible points?

During auto:
All 3 robots cross defense in auto: 3 x (10) = 30pts
All 3 robots toss their boulder in during auto: 3 x 10 = 30pts

During teleop:
7 more undamaged defense crossings: 35pts
5 more balls...

End of an era: Waterloo wooden bleachers to be replaced

http://www.therecord.com/sports-story/6140990-uw-bleachers-may-you-rest-in-pieces/

Think of all the safety glasses that won't be dropped! Think of the 2-4 volunteers that won't need to don hardhats...

Re: Do we want another game without defense?

It's not so much the physical contact: it is entirely possible to design a game with defense that _doesn't_ have physical contact of any kind. Large protected zones so that contact is optional or...

Re: Do we want another game without defense?

I did enjoy not having to worry about full-speed ramming and other kinds of alliance interactions, but it definitely made the game less interesting.

I agree that an Aim High or "protected zone"...

Re: Future First Championship News

CMP1 team could be flown out of their hometowns on Friday evening, and returned by Sunday. No school or work time missed. They only _need_ to be present for the 3 matches on Saturday afternoon. In...

Re: Future First Championship News

If they're having two large events, they could probably afford to compensate the team for shipping and transit costs.

As I read the announcement and saw they were 2 weeks apart, I was sure the "true...

Re: Analysis of team ranking

That's not entirely true - the way the math works out, you end up solving for "the number of points added by that team being in an alliance". If a team tends to take fouls, gets in the way, blocks...

Re: Analysis of team ranking

It would appear you've independently discovered what is commonly called OPR :) Although it works very well this year, it can also work well in more defense-heavy years. The main breakage for OPR is...

Re: Should the Number One seed be Alloud to pick the Number Two seed?

He's talking about the regional win rate - if through some rule change, the #1 alliance started winning 45% of the time, it means the other alliances would gain. There's only 1 regional champion at...

Re: Should the Number One seed be Alloud to pick the Number Two seed?

Ontarian here: You mean that it's possible for any alliance other than the #1 alliance to win? What a strange concept...

Re: Defense comprimise ideas

My team brainstormed a bit about how to make this game more team-on-team interactive without requiring robots to actually interact:
-Take the lip off the step, double the width of the step, and put...

Re: Going to multiple regionals

In past years where we've been able to do multiple events, I've chosen to skip practice day at one or more events to preserve my vacation days. Usually the important work on practice day is just for...

Re: Programming FRC robot in Visual Studio

I believe there is a way to set up a makefile project, but it'd be a long job. You'd basically have to bind the "build" and "run" actions to shell scripts that do the actual compiling and deploying....

Re: RAMP TETHER

We did the same in our quarterfinals at waterloo - during eliminations, we had an alliance member assume our ramp tether (we were planning on adding an autonomous canburglar which would prevent the...

Re: 2015 OPR After Week Two Events

There's a much bigger way to influence the other team's score in qualifications: Say that you'll cooperate, and then fail to do so (on purpose or not). If they spend 30-60 seconds getting their...

Re: Team 1114 - Simbot SideSwipe

If it tethered to another alliance member, that alliance member would have to at least get weighed and possibly get inspected with the chute attached.

Re: G10, The Dallas Disable & Crickets Chirping in Manchester

Hey Rich

Just want to chime into say you'd be welcome reffing any regional I'm at. No, the 60-seconds wasn't a hard-and-fast rule in the book, but your warn-then-penalize approach seems fair if...

Re: Week 1 Observations

At least on the webcast, the lack of actual head-to-head competition between alliances really hurts the excitement level. The final 20 seconds of the match loses a lot of suspense when you're only...
