Re: hurdler or herder?

I think herding will prove to be more of a hassle than its worth. All but the best herders will likely spend more time trying to herd and control a ball than to just run around the track a second...

Re: Scissort Lift vs. Crane vs. 4-Bar Lift vs. Gas Springs

From my experience almost every rookie team has to build their one scissor lift to learn firsthand why they're a tough choice for FIRST. In almost every robot situation a different mechanism will be...

Re: pic: Team 1717 Panel (alone)

Those platforms look quite awesome and strong. I'm very happy to see other home grown solutions to the platform material question.

My team also went with a very similar solution to the platform...

Re: Team 2214 Robot

Looks like a really nice robot, even more so for a rookie. Looks like it should be a very valuable addition to any team.

I have noticed that scissor lifts seem to be very common among rookie teams....

Re: pic: Robonauts '07 - Redline

Wow is all I have to say. That is one incredible robot.

I saw the video and assumed this was what you must be doing, but to see it close enough to make out all its awesome details is just...

Re: Drive Systems... ...The FIRST Arms Race?

I think if you start limiting the drivetrain you'll stiffle some good innovation. The last few years of FIRST have seen a number of interesting drivetrains crop up. Drivetrains are evolving and one...

Re: paper: Martian Scouting Sheets

I think this is a good sheet but I have an issue with it(and most scouting sheets.) Numbers are useful for choosing teams and for highlighting teams that are consistently succesful or rooting out...

Re: American Robot Season 2 Episode 5!

You guys definitely finished your robot way too early. That video was almost half guitar hero! That being said your robot looks awesome. I love the gripper and I love that you showed how to make it...

Re: pic: 1018 Robodevils Secret Weapon

If its going into the oven its some kind of composite. Probably a fiberglass body that needs to be heated to have the epoxy cure. I can't wait to see what the finished product is. Those pieces sure...

Re: Chain Covers

Chains are so common that I think they get ignored. Particularly in the drivetrain it would be a huge pain to try and cover up every corner the chain makes. Generally they are already in areas that...

Re: How do you cheesehole?

I wouldn't recomend doing a lot of little holes with a hand drill it will take you forever.(a 1/4" hole in 1/8" thick aluminum weighs all of .0025 pounds) One thing you can do however depending on...

Re: How do you cheesehole?

Yup put a 2" hole saw in the drill press, apply a lot of cutting fluid or grease and just starting chopping. It will probably make a sound like somebody is dying but you've just gotta go with it.

Re: Where to buy Ball Bearings?

I don't believe there is a FIRST endorsed site that will sell you more of these bearings. However a wonderful industrial supplier named mcmaster does.

Just head on over to http://www.mcmaster.com...

Re: pool tube aggression

You're forgetting two key things, the spirit of the rule and what I see as a referee. If you're aggressive with a tube you're still being aggressive the way I see it and would be punished...

Re: Which wheels will you use for your robot this year?

I know my team will be using IFI wheels. IFI has created a really high quality product that is just too easy and nice to use. My team tried to make wheels once, and it worked, but you'll be hard...

Re: need help..!!

You can't hook them both up to one spike. You can solve the problem using software though. Just make sure that however you were going to trigger the single spike before, now sets both spikes to drive...

Re: Alternative to CIM with 12:1 GearBox

I may have read your post wrong but it actually sounds like you're trying to drive each wheel independently with its own motor. One thing you could look into is connecting your wheels with roller...

Re: Lexan side panel thickness?

I'll second Andrew Blair's comments. I have never seen a piece of lexan actually fail outright. I've seen it get bent or deformed slightly. So unless you need structural rigidity out of it keep it...

Re: end game defense

My team thought of this, but I don't think teams will do it. First you're breaking the rules which most people dont' want to do even if there is a finite penalty you can get for it. Secondly just by...

Re: Dual CIMs gear box adapter

Thanks for the explanation Joe.

I guess my team is safe from the inefficiency monster, they're using the dewalt gearbox which doesn't do more than 4:1 per stage(or some other reasonable number). I...

Re: Elevators/ Forklifts

That looks fantastic but you're right its going to be heavy. One thing to keep in mind this year is that the ringers only weigh about a pound. That device there could probably, based on my wildly...

Re: Dual CIMs gear box adapter

Dr. Joe I recently heard that planetary gearboxes were much more efficient than that(on the order of 98%) but I'd hate to argue with you and what I heard could very well have just been hearsay....

Re: locking a joint--suggestions?

My team had a similar idea in 2005. We had a carriage on a beam system for our tetra manipulator. It ran along an aluminum 2" x 4" square extrusion and at the start of the match we would increase its...

Re: Positioning of Battery

I'm pretty sure you can do whatever you want with your battery. I once wanted to use it as a counter weight for an arm, my team didn't like the idea. :)

Re: pic: test pilot riding the robot elevator

My guess is that under that platform is a jack set up. Seeing as how there is no lifting mechanism on the robot and a pneumatic set up is sitting off to the left. You can see an automotive jack here...
