Re: Pneumatic Solenoids

We used these (http://www.andymark.com/product-p/am-0888.htm). Festo 12V VUVG series solenoids are quite reliable and easy to mount compactly; we just stacked them together and put bolts through the...

Re: F.I.R.S.T Robotics Recycle Rush board game

We made a board game version of Stronghold at the beginning of build season in order to test strategies. It wasn't very helpful, although I think we tweaked the rules a bit after competition season...

Re: Most underrated/undervalued tools

I did not know that these things existed. Time to get some.

Re: How much does your school's general population care about your team?

Outside of the STEM magnet program, most people don't know that we exist. The sports teams get mentioned on the morning announcements whenever they have a game, win or lose, but we never get any...

Re: prototypes

Generally, we build prototypes out of 80/20 for optimizing geometry and proof of concept, usually finishing by the middle of week 3. Once that's done, we may build a Gen. II prototype for more...

Re: Pit monitor idea

One of our members wrote some Javascript that displays our match schedule, actual match times, and ranking, along with some helpful visuals. Since it didn't use any internet connection, we had to...

Re: How does your CAD team work?

Our CAD team is basically just three guys. Generally, our Mechanics subteam will prototype mechanisms and figure out the required geometry. We have weekly integration meetings to keep everyone on the...

Re: Stronghold Drivetrain Review

We went with 6 8" pneumatic wheels and single-speed 3-CIM WC gearboxes. Front and back wheels were mounted in Versablocks, with 1/8" drop centers. Our team has been using 9mm belts for the past...

Re: Chesapeake Region Community Outreach Partners

My team is also interested in the Kid Museum thing. A lot of our members live nearby, so getting people shouldn't be too hard. Feel free to PM me about anything.

Re: Hardest personal lesson learned?

Don't try to do everything. You have to trust people under you to do things right.

Re: Was the Low Bar worth it?

For us, I would say yes. First of all, we decided against a high shooter because it would have required vision code, which we didn't know how to do and didn't think there would be enough time to...

Re: How did you feel about Stronghold?

I though that Stronghold was a pretty good game. The amount of abuse the robots take was a unique engineering challenge, and the low bar required prioritizing some things over others, or having...

Re: Team Size

I feel the same way. We have about 100 members, and we generally have 20-30 around at any given time during build season, with 40-50 active. This is too many for us to effectively use. One solution...

Re: What would you do to improve the FIRST experience?

I've always been wondering about this. Does Chairman's have to be for STEM, or can it be from other impacts of the team as an organization?

Re: Old Man Notices A Thing: Lots of Robot Names

We generally take nominations around week 4 of build season, when the robot design is mostly finalized, and then do a name vote a couple weeks later. The name is usually some sort of pun.

2016:...

Re: What would you do to improve the FIRST experience?

I may have worded that badly. It's mostly just the new members who do this, but they make up a sizable portion of the team. But no, I don't think that it's just us dismissing other teams' cultures....

Re: "Quotes" that were said during build season

Inspector: Do you guys have a multimeter?
(Person passes him a multimeter)
Inspector: Fantastic. I also need the leads for this.

Re: What would you do to improve the FIRST experience?

Reform safety awards, and pit safety in general. The teams that go around giving out mostly useless safety giveaways (Easter eggs with 2 Band-Aids and a hair tie, for example) are not actually trying...

Re: "Quotes" that were said during build season

While attaching leads to a battery:
Electronics person: I think this bolt is too long, but I can't unscrew it.
Mechanics person: Why does that matter? We can just Dremel it.

We can't turn on the...

Re: [FRC Blog] Rogue Robots

This happened again today at the Greater DC event. During auto, our robot crashed through the side of the field, drove over a spare field element, and tried to attack people in the bleachers. Well,...
