Re: VEXpro 2017

Did you fix the issue with the pins coming out of the carrier plates? This is a problem on the 7:1, 9:1, and 10:1 stages. We fought this all last season, and even tried epoxy and welding with mixed...

Re: SkillsUSA vs. FIRST

Thanks for sharing. Skills is great on so many levels. When in school I competed a couple times for precision machining, and it was a great experience.

We did the same thing for one of our prototypes. Pressing a short section of 3/8" hex shaft onto the motor has worked great. We hex broached some timing pulleys and secured them with a shaft collar....

Re: paper: Optimization and Analysis of Drivetrain Movement

This is really neat stuff. My calculus is very rusty, but using a theoretical model to optimize gear ratios has potential to be very effective. I don't have or know how to use Maple though. Would it...

Re: 4946 Alpha Dogs 2016 Chassis Design Preview

Looks solid! A couple thoughts: It looks like you have a lot of extra space to move the outer wheels further apart. This will improve stability. Also, I'm curious what's inside the big box? Is that a...

Well to be honest this gearbox was simply a design exercise. I have heard the rule of thumb about gearing low enough to push for 2 minutes without tripping a breaker. But isn't that usually against...

I think you could make a fixture with pins to align the pinions and a guide for the broach to ensure the keyways are all clocked the same. Is it worth the effort? Probably not.

The plates are 0.25". You're right they could be thinner, but I like the support they provide for the bearings.

I didn't spend a lot of time looking at the alternatives, but the selection of ball shifter gears is pretty limited. When I found a combination that worked and gave a 1.82:1 spread, I stuck with it....

Re: pic: Single Stage Ballshifter

You make a good point about over constraining things. It's not so much the location of the motors in the gearbox, but the angular alignment of the 11T and 18T gears on all of the motors have to be...

This is an idea I had to make a smaller two speed gearbox. The CIMs drive the ball shifting gears directly. The intent is to add a second stage of...

Re: pic: 775pro Arm Gearbox

That's a good idea. There are obviously many ways to retain the bearings, and if we actually make this gearbox, I may stick with our usual approach of turning the ends of the shafts down and putting...

Re: pic: 4587 Wheel and Chain in Tube Drive

Cool design! When our grade11 students showed me their preseason drive train, I envisioned something like this, but they were reluctant to hide the chain, and probably for good reason. Repairs if...

Wow, you guys are thinking about this a lot more than we did :) In our previous designs going back to 2010, roll pins are used in the corners of the tube to align them, and everything is held...

Yes, that was the drive train I measured the current on. I expect the current draw to go down once it has been driven a while and things loosen up. The chains are pretty tight because we added 0.018...

Thanks for sharing. We recently tested one side of a new drive train and measured about 7.5 amps. At the time I wasn't sure if this was reasonable. Your 8 amp rule of thumb makes sense!

Re: pic: Offseason Training: Electronics & Basic Circuit Design

This is a great idea. The only thing I don't like about the Grayhill encoders is the connector pins that get bent out of shape so easily. We also have had issues with students feeling compelled to...

Re: New Products for 2016: Speculation, Wants

I didn't really take Thunderhex seriously last year because every time I checked, the bearings were out of stock. I'm not a fan of proprietary sized bearings because they are only available from a...

Yes! I am in full agreement. We have hex broaches and I still hate hex. The quality of the bearings is questionable, and the tolerances are sloppy. I much prefer using 1/2" ground keyed shafting....

Re: Vex Versaplanetary gearbox repair

We had a shaft pop out of a Vex planetary gearbox several times last year. This was mainly because we had rather large rollers cantilevered off the gearbox, and I don't think they are designed to...

Re: Team Dave Presents: Blaine

I'm liking this design a lot. The dual gantry elevator looks like it is very effective. Is there anything mechanical to keep the gantries from crashing into each other or is it all done in code?
