Re: VEX inputs

Has anyone actually gotten some of the encoders? They've been listed on the vexlabs.com and the radioshack.com sites as being "sold out - coming soon" for the last couple of months.

Have they been...

Re: If you could change one rule - eliminate ship requirement discussion

skimoose,
Most of what I posted is true if you do away with the ship date but down tools at the end of six weeks (i.e. have a Completion Date deadline).

However, FIRST has increased the scope of...

Re: If you could change one rule - eliminate ship requirement discussion

As I've read this thread, it seems that FIRST is a robot building competition. I thought that FIRST had different goals. Perhaps I am mistaken.

Goal One. Inspire pre-college students to pursue...

2005 St. Louis Regional

I searched and could not find a 2005 St. Louis Regional Thread. With slightly more than one week before we actually start competing, I thought I would put this out there.

I look forward to seeing...

Re: covering...

One year, a robot ended up on top of our robot with their treads spinning on top of our controller box. Had we had exposed controller and wiring, our controls would have been toast.

This year, with...

Re: worm gear emergency

My experience with worms and worm gears is that you often have to replace them as a set. The lead angle on the worm+worm gear is usually a custom number.

So, be careful trying to mate a "Stock...

Re: Do defensive, low scoring tactics work?

Once more...the offense versus defense argument.

A team which designs specifically for defense will be very effective in this competition. A box on wheels which can't do anything else is not a good...

Re: Capping Speed

When you say "capping speed," do you mean the time it takes to load a tetra, travel to the goal, and deliver it? Or just the time it takes to deploy it when you have reached the goal?

I...

Re: THE Fisher-Price Motor Spec Sheet

Another thing to think about...

If the FP GB was designed to work with this motor at 6v, what are the plastic gear teeth going to do when you stall it at 12v?

Is it reasonable to expect that they...

Re: G15 explained - interference examples

As I read the rules and updates, if Blueabot is putting a lock-down on Redabot's LZ, Redabot (x3) can initiate as much contact as they want without ever fearing a penalty, since Blueabot cannot ever...

Re: Hall Effect Sensor.

We made a small mounting piece which we have registered on the inside of the KIT gearboxes. I am waiting for a connector so that I can test it. The sensor faces the big output gear. I'll post up...

Re: Official 2005 Clue Thread

I'm going to stick with the baseball clue, since Johnny Neun and George Burns are the only first basemen to turn an unassisted triple play.

I think Pi refers to the (Pi)tchers mound, a circular...

Re: Appropriate penalties for off-the-field ethical/behavioral violations

Another possible "punishment" would be to have some respected person at FIRST sit down with a team which has been caught in a major rules violation and explain exactly what GP is, how this team's...

Re: Appropriate penalties for off-the-field ethical/behavioral violations

How does kicking teams out of FIRST or out of a FIRST Regional (for which they've paid good money) contribute to FIRST's mission?

I agree that when mentors openly cheat, it sends a poor message to...

Re: [moderated] Spare Parts Rule for 2005

If a team shows up at competition with an entire robot, which they supposedly built in three days, I think eye-brows will be raised. Assuming that FIRST maintains the $3500 limit and requires...

Re: No official FIRST game hint yet??

If you search on DL's posts, you will see that this was not, in fact, his fourth post of the day, it was his only post of the day (12-03-04). I think this means the number four is significant. Not...

Re: How many teams in 2005?

The link was created by going to the teams in a state on FIRST's map and deleting the state and country field. I have a feeling it was generated by teams pre-registering for the competition. When...

Re: [moderated] Spare Parts Rule for 2005

However, if you allow 3 days prior to competition for additional fabrication and you...

Re: [moderated] Spare Parts Rule for 2005

Every year that I have been involved in FIRST, there has been a different "spare parts" rule. I would think, after so many years, we would be zeroing in on getting it right.

Before coming up with a...

Re: Is a shifting transmission really necessary?

The rules specifically indicate that pushing [shoving] is OK and expected. Why would you say it's not FIRST-encouraged?

This is, in fact, the main reason for a low gear in a transmission.
