Re: pic: Top Down Gearbox View

My advice is anytime your intuition tells you something, double check it with physics. That's something that's served me well is to both trust my gut, but make sure my gut is correct, and make sure...

Re: Sport or not?

I agree. I've learned a ton from sports. I have had so many life lessons because of tennis. Robotics has taught me a ton too, but I've only been involved with FIRST for 2 years while I've been...

Re: Sport or not?

I've personally worked harder at FIRST than anything else, and harder than any other student on my team. However, the level of physical exertion is nothing compared to what my sister had to do for...

Re: Sport or not?

I'd imagine that Dean refers to robotics as a sport because sports is the closest analogy to FIRST that most people have.

FIRST is not a sport. Robotics is not a sport. Overdrive is not a sport....

Re: Undecided about the 2008 presidential election?

Personally, I know which candidate I want to win, but realistically, I live in NY and practically no matter what, Obama will win NY. The democratic candidate will win in NY, so in reality, if I vote...

Re: When were you inspired?

I was actually "inspired" before FIRST came into my life. I was inspired through the building events of Science Olympiad. Then, the advisor that I worked with for Science Olympiad told me about...

Re: pic: Leveraging FIRST members?

Businesses do what is best for them. In many cases, businesses sponsor FIRST because it produces engineers that have a favorable opinion of the companies that sponsor them. The real world isn't...

Re: Control System Test Wish List

My team would be interested in at least one Beta Test team testing drive code for Mecanum wheels using closed loop encoder feedback, and/or gyro feedback to keep the robot straight.

Beware of plastic gears, although they are lighter. Make sure they can handle the applied loads.

Re: What Do You Wish You Would Have Known Your Rookie Year?

But its fun to complain =D.

Seriously, the drive team comment made me think of all the sub-teams that teams should have. Not just mechanical, software, electronics and however teams break it up,...

Re: What Do You Wish You Would Have Known Your Rookie Year?

Ok, Chief Delphi. Amazing resourse, and there is a lot of discussion on different ideas and ways to approach the game after the kickoff.

Mechanical Resources. AndyMark, we didn't know about. ...

Re: UU FIRST Service

Very good point. Religion plays no part and has no significance in FIRST, so working with or against members or teams that are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, or any other religion isn't an...

In my opinion, this isn't, and shouldn't be, a discussion on his religion. Its just another place to talk about FIRST. Its just like talking at a school, or going on the news, or talking to a...

Re: **FIRST EMAIL**/Invitation to Beta test the New Control System

Exactly. There is a reason that 1114 has won 5 regionals and the championship in the last 2 years and it isn't luck. Teams do not have the same resources, and teams are not on a level playing...

Re: **FIRST EMAIL**/Invitation to Beta test the New Control System

Of course the teams that get the units will do better on average. But thats not because they got the units. It may or may not help, but think about it. Lets say you give units to 1114 and 254,...

Re: **FIRST EMAIL**/Invitation to Beta test the New Control System

I agree. Working with experienced teams in our general area, 365, 341, 20, 191 and others would be a fabulous experience. Also, I honestly cannot think of a better way to do this than the proposed...
