help am I doing this right.
A few minutes or so.

It could be that the imaging tool is having difficulty detecting that the cRIO has rebooted. I've seen on occasion when the computer running the imaging tool is slow or bogged down, the cRIO reboots before the Imaging tool notices that it ever went away. This is exacerbated by being in safe mode, since the cRIO reboot only takes a few seconds in that case.

If you have a serial console hooked up during reimaging and you notice that it claims to be formatting, then the cRIO reboots but the imaging tool keeps waiting for > 30 seconds, then you have hit this case. The format as already completed. You should just turn off the Safe Mode dip switch and reboot the cRIO. Now you should see it in the imaging tool and you can format it again (this time not in safe mode so it will actually install the v25 image).
