How was the router reset?

During development, I pushed the button and powered the dlink. The result was a router that brought up some sort of emergency page which hinted that it needed a firmware image. I was able to download the image from the dlink site and revive the router.

I believe that dlink reset procedure says to leave the power on and push the button for ten seconds. I couldn't find it documented, but it seems that the powered-reset is very low level and deletes the firmware.
