I'm curious as to why you would do this?

I can't think of any situation where it would be a good idea, the fans use a negligible amount of power, and power FETs can actually heat up quite rapidly if your motor stalls, even momentarily by accident.

Actually, I've never looked in the rules regarding this particular configuration, is there anything in the rules forbidding a fanless speed controller, or is it just not a good idea?

I'm a FIRST relic of sorts, I remember when we used PBASIC and we got CH Flightsticks in the KoP. In my day we didn't have motorized carts, we pushed our robots uphill, both ways! (Houston 2003!)
