Nothing in the control system cares what is providing the network link between the Driver Station and the cRIO. We successfully use the Linksys router and WGA on our old robots with new software, and it works fine on the control board of this year's practice robot as well.
The requirement for the D-Link DAP is only going to matter at a competition, where it will be specifically configured as a wireless bridge looking for your team's SSID using a unique security key.
