I seem to remember 343 having 2 speed transmissions on their tanktreads during breakaway.
Many teams do some pre-season prototyping--just be mindful of next season's rules when going back to what you've already built either for design or for grabbing parts. Testing a mecanum drive before using it in competition will be especially helpful, either for driving practice or for realizing it's absolutely not for you! (It does take a certain style of driving--1293 used mecanums in 2008 and swore them off almost immediately.) The two-speeds (AndyMark shifters, I assume) are quite valuable (about $330 a pop); if you don't use them yourself, you can probably trade with another team for something of pretty good value.

If you feel like putting them to the test, throw some bumpers on 'em and bring it to SCRIW this fall. Nothing like the heat of competition to see where something works....and while we're looking to give it that big-time feel, I know the stakes are much lower at SCRIW compared to Palmetto
