Re: Role of Team Captain

Is your team captain guaranteed a drive team position each year?

No. For the three years I have been on my team only once has a member in a leadership position been on the drive team and, even, then as the drive coach. I personally like it this way as it allows more members to be involved at tournaments. Sometimes what makes a person a good leader does not make him/her a good drive coach.

What are the responsibilities of your team's team captain? & What role(s) does your team captain preform on your team?

I am the president of my team this year and I can echo what Julia said in her post. The president fills in gaps that he/she sees. This year I have been involved with Chairman's, outreach, and website/social networking. I also take care of paperwork, talking with mentors/parents, checking in with different departments, e-mailing (lot and lots of that), and setting up meetings/outreach events. My team has a project manager for the robot side of the team and department heads to take care of the robot design/fabrication.

How do you form your drive team each year?

Usually, on the last week of build season, we have a drivers test and tryouts. The test consists of general rules and some strategy-related questions. If someone scores high on the drivers test, it can help influence the picking. After the test, the members who would like to drive line up and are given a basic obstacle course to drive around. If the top two drivers are equally matched, we take use the driver's test results and the member's attitude into account.
