The rest of FIRST, as you put it, apparently defines success as
winning. Qualifying for the Championship is, for the most part, a winner-take-all situation. You have to have
won the previous Championship,
won a previous Championship Chairman’s Award,
won a Regional,
won the Engineering Inspiration Award, or have
won the Rookie All-Star Award.
There are a number of teams who are always the bride’s maid. They always seed high or get picked by those who do, but never walk away with the gold. Their continued high performance should earn them the right to compete in the State championship and not give that up to a rookie who only had to compete with other rookies for their award.
