As someone who stopped doing Fantasy FIRST, I think the current format (picking 3 teams per every event) is just too much for most people who don't know more than 5 or so teams per event. I personally don't have the time/willingness to do research on every event and thus I ended up getting a lot of random teams, which really isn't fun. If it was up to me, I would something like Fantasy Football, where you have 20 teams the entire year and you 'start' 5 each week. But, of course I'm not running Fantasy FIRST, but I hope to provide some persective (and a suggestion) as to why people drop out--just too much work to pick 3 teams for every event for the average participant.

I think this idea could help solve that problem, but it isn't perfect. What if there is only 1 person intersted on your team? What if people on the same team want to be seperate?
