So this is an article the same reporter wrote for January 31, 2011.

What has happened at Johnston/Eastside Memorial since then has been a colossal waste of tax dollars and an offense against students who are stuck in a failing school. It might well be time to hand it over to the folks at Southwest Key who for some time have coveted the campus to fulfill their goal of expanding their charter school and presence in East Austin.

As you all know, on April 2, 2011, she wrote an inspiring article about the team.

This is an article unrelated to the team directly but towards the school where we are.

Southwest Key's proposal to take over the entire Eastside campus would dismantle one of the most promising programs in the Austin district – Green Tech's science, math and technology academy, which is preparing a generation of students, most of whom are minority, to be engineers, techies and scientists. As Central Texas attracts more software and tech companies, its schools need to produce the skilled workers to take those jobs.

Green Tech is helping to fill that void. The school's robotics team brought home two trophies in statewide competition this year. Green Tech stumbled initially because of the way it was thrown together in an attempt to be all things to all people. But the school now is finding its niche and has great potential, given time and district support.

One failing school is too many. But the district's record has improved, and its experience, along with leadership by Superintendent Meria Carstarphen, make it better qualified than Southwest Key to run Eastside Memorial.
