I've seen teams use two flat pieces of polycarbonate, acting as parallel members in a 4-bar linkage, as a flexible suspension member. This will work with 1/8" and 1/4" (really 0.21") thick polycarbonate. If the ends of each flat piece are fixed, then you can get about 2-3" of travel over a 7-8" span.
