I believe the origin of this rumor is the fact that all even numbered team automatically qualify to REGISTER for the championships. (See Open Teams Letter - Championship Changes on FIRST's web site.) All teams -- including even numbered teams -- are required to register for a regional competition before registering for the Championship. Whether any team (whether qualifying by virtue of posessing an even team number or by satisfying one of the other requirements) can AFFORD to attend the championship is a wholly different question.
