Assuming you're using 2010 or newer, FBX would be the way to go, its Autodesks native universal format, so its fully compatible with most Autodesk products including 3ds Max, Maya, AutoCAD, Inventor and Revit. The FBX imports all of the data from the scene (objects, textures/materials, camera's, lighting).
Other than that, I'm pretty sure Maya will import max's native format, as well as other standards such as IGES, STP, DFX.
