I used to have 8 of them, but removed 4 of them for space reasons. Part of the reason I selected them to remove is because the counters can already handle the 1x and 2x encoder cases. I think it's a good chance to teach engineering trade-offs (choosing where to allocate the 4x vs 2x decoding).
