It is not meant to. The idea is that while your right hand controls a regular mouse for direct object manipulation, the left hand is occupied by the SpaceNavigator, which allows you to fluidly navigate through 3d space. Of course, having only two hands, this prohibits use of the keyboard unless a hand is moved to do so.
