Here is an other example of a recommended 0.003" gear clearance:

My ancient Atlas 618 lathe uses changeable gears to set the ratio between the spindle and the lead screw, allowing one to cut several different pitch threads. The owner's manual (from the 1940s) explains that we should use a piece of paper as a clearance gauge between the gears when setting their position: Put the paper where the gears mesh and tighten, then pull the paper out, resulting in correct clearance.
