Smile Lightening Gearboxes?

Hello Forum,

I have a question today regarding the lightening of gears in our gearboxes. Currently, our homemade, dual-shifting gearbox weighs in at around 3.5 - 4 lbs before any lightening. I know that, on our gears, there is a lot of weight we could shave off by milling into the sides.

However, what engineering principles/equations/testing can be done to optimize weight without affecting the strength/performance of our gears.

The Gearbox is fully designed in Solidworks, however I do not know how/if I could use SimulationXpress FEA modeling to complete this task.

Thanks everybody in advance!
