Think of a car and how when traveling at low speeds the engine can rev at high rpm's, and at higher speeds the engine can rev at lower rpm's.

Some teams take this concept and use it for their drive trains. Its very useful because it allows for higher speeds and more maneuverable control than a single-speed.
