It is the only easy way to do OI I/O, but of course there are other possibilities - just not so easy.

Another option, is the EStop Robotics CCI, which emulates a joystick with digital and analog IO.

There were some firmware issues early last season, but I didn't hear of any trouble after those were resolved.
