If this is the first time you have saved the assembly since adding the 2009 sub-assembly there is a possibility that there is a backup file saved to your computer if the backup setting was turned on. Open SolidWorks Options>Backup/Recovery and see if the Backup section is turned on. If it is, check the file location listed and your 2009 file should be saved there. When this function is turned on, everytime you save a file that last saved file gets saved as the backup.

Unfortunately if you have already saved the assembly more than once than this file is now a 2011 file.

The problem with saving as an older version is that every release there are new features and interface changes. This in turn changes the structure of the "save file". This is where the problem occurs. There is no way of keeping the same "save file" structure without losing features that are new or have undergone changes that do not exist in an older release of SolidWorks. This is something we have been looking into for some time now and something we have been trying to figure out.
