If i remember vB correctly, once there is so much traffic on the site that the server starts to overload, it will automatically shut down the boards for a few minutes. (Just like it did right before 9:00 PM)
Therefore, I'd have to say that whatever the max is now, it will be that way for a while.
PS: To overload a VPS, you have to have a hell of a lot of requests in a very short time. I guess that's what happens when you have 800 teams!
