Re: Funny things to ask for on the PA system
True (but long) story.
I'm a Neurosurgeon. Towards the end of most lumbar surgeries, I ask the Anesthesiologist to perform a "Valsalva maneuver". This involves closing certain valves on the breathing loop and squeezing the oxygen bag; similar to you taking in a big breath, then trying to exhale with your mouth and nose closed and turning your face red. Since this is a common maneuver, I usually just say loudly, "I need a Valsalva," while looking at the incision through the microscope.
The great part is when we have a new nurse in the room; I will then look at him/her and repeat, "I need a Valsalva." The nurse assumes I am asking for an instrument, but of course there is no such instrument and she/he panics not knowing what or where the instrument is. After a few seconds, we all laugh, and tell the new nurse he/she is now initiated into the Neuro team.
Once again, FIRST prepares students for life in the real world.
