It's a little bit clumsy, because it requires a copy of the licence be transmitted along with the copyrighted material. Not a big deal if the works are large; more of a problem when you're distributing small works individually.

The GPL is also quite software-focused, so some of the terms are a little strange in the context of hardware (or hardware designs), or artistic/non-technical works. I haven't reviewed it in detail, but I suspect it should work fine for this purpose nevertheless.

The Creative Commons licences don't have those restrictions/optimizations. They'd probably be fine too.
