I honestly wouldn't use the approach putting down the sports teams. Sure, they may not all be the brightest but not everyone can be gifted with certain skills (I for sure know I'm pretty deficient in the science realm). You don't want to be an elitist or stoop down to SOME athletes' levels by thinking you're better than them. I didn't do sports in school but I was in ASB (student gov) and that was stereotyped as all the popular stupid folk. What you want is an equal amount of respect from the school, so emphasize the good of your team and what you get out of it. I've done a lot of work with the school adminsitration and I know for sure that getting them angry will not solve a thing, you have to learn to work with them.
