Although I know you are kidding, getting from the NJ side into the NYC regional is not incredibly difficult - I know it's hard for a larger group but the NJ Transit's Northeast Corridor runs from Trenton > Princeton Junction > New Brunswick > Newark > NYC... If you could find a hotel along the NECorridor line, you could probably stay somewhere for cheap and get some train passes. This also applies to staying somewhere outside of Manhattan and using the Subway (maybe- I'm not as familiar with that system)
