The fuel and temperature gages on my '76 Mini only worked accurately when the headlights were off. When driving at night I would have to pull over and use a flashlight to check them. At the time I hadn't heard the "Get home before dark" motto so instead I just kept a extra jerry can of gas in the trunk.
