We did this also. We epoxied a cylindrical magnet to the end of the wheel shaft. We got pulses that looked good on the oscilloscope though we got better readings when we added a low pass filter so I suspect there was some high frequency noise on the output. This solution cost us maybe $5.00 in parts.
