My team uses a spike to power the compressor because we just need it on or off so there is no need for a jag,victor, or talon.

I cant remember the exact set up off the top of my head, but ill take a look at my teams pneumatic set up tomorrow to give you the steps for wiring it.

A solenoid and a spike shouldn't be connected. You have to connect the solenoid to the cRio using a pneumatic bumper.
