As Chris mentioned above... don't confuse speed with acceleration.
A VW can have the same speed as a Ferrari....
But the Ferrari has more acceleration....

Acceleration requires more force... (Newton's 2nd Law)
More motors will usually give you the opportunity to provide more force and thus acceleration.
