What's worse, if you look at distributions of teams in Florida they are really segmented. Or at least that's how it appeared to me. (It's also been about a year since I checked into it)

In Michigan we have a heavy concentration in SE Michigan and a heavy smattering on the west coast of the state. But overall they are heavily concentrated in those two areas with SE being far more heavily populated (I grew up with no less than 3 FRC teams within 20 minutes of my house, 27, 33, and 68. And I lived on the outskirts of the suburbs, north 5 miles was farmland and almost 0 cell signal). This lent itself to districts quite easily as it meant most teams don't have travel costs other than gas for the family van.

Cali is in a different boat as far as distribution. It's worth looking into if you are hoping for districts in your area. Distributions and densities do matter otherwise you won't be saving a whole lot on travel costs (and in some cases, you spend more). Districts are NOT a magic bullet to solve all the FIRST problems. They work in certain areas due to peculiarities in their geography, population density, team density, and sponsor density.
