ok i managd to do what i wanted. i have no idea why it didn't work before but i remade the piece and using some tutorials i found at
http://www.sdotson.com/index.asp i was able to make it work as i wanted it too.
i would strongly suggest looking though the site if you have any inventer questions. i thought that it was well laid out and the tutorials are easy to follow
