Re: Aquiring Space

Ask around! There are lots of people willing to lend you space! Our team has been through 4 build spaces in 8 years. 2 of them were warehouses that local businesses let us borrow. We had to fill it with our own parts and machines, but it was flexible. There were some off-limits areas as well, but it wasn't obstructive. We also had an earth-contact home donated to us. It had no running water and the insulation was awful, but we won 2 Chairman's Awards and a regional out of that house.

For the past 2 years, we've been blessed to have a district-sponsored build space for each of our three high schools' teams. In 2010, the district passed a bond issue that allowed for the renovation of 3 wrestling rooms at one of the high schools. Each of the Lee's Summit teams got a blank slate to make a new home from. Between us and 1986 is literally a swinging door, and 1730 is across the alley. If you talk to your school, I'd bet they'd be willing to help.

If your school district doesn't offer you space, ask around to businesses and parents. Some of them would surely have something to offer. It's also very reassuring to own your own tools and machines. If you need big machines, some machining companies have old ones they might be willing to lend to you. That's how we got our Bridgeport.

Hope this helps!
