I guess avionics engineers for human rated hardware have REALLY high standards for what makes a cool job.

I think designing jets is cool (they are definitely way cooler than the general public thinks), but I think everyone can agree that rockets are even better.

For students this is an amazing opportunity. I had lots of wicked smart friends clamoring for SpaceX jobs and only one snagged one, so you guys really only take the best of the best.
