One of Team RUSH's alumni has created a system that we use for one of our robots, MA, whose demo system allows for any android device to use his app and communicate with an arduino board. The source code is accessible
here, and the breakout board we use is available
here. Of course, you can take this and change the code to your heart's desire, but it's an excellent learning process for anyone just getting into programming, on either the control side or the app side.
