We did this in 2011. I'll point our programming mentor to this thread and he should be able to answer some questions for you.
Our driver could use a joystick button to rotate the robot so the scoring end faced the scoring rack. That button worked independently of other motion, so if he wanted, he could press that button while driving toward the scoring area and the robot would automatically spin as it translated. We also used field-oriented drive.
