A big part of that would probably be Andy Baker. Even though he is no longer a mentor for the team who started (and continues to co-host) IRI, he is still a major force making IRI what it is.
Another big part is just good timing. IRI moved to its current location, with room for scores of teams, right when a lot of teams decided they wanted to participate in an off-season competition. That led to a feedback effect, with more teams making for better competition and more publicity, leading to more interest from more teams.
Speaking of location, Indianapolis is a relatively convenient place to travel to, so that helps.
